How to Reduce Moving Costs While on a Budget
Posted on: Tuesday, May 24th, 2022Relocating can be a challenging process. It’s easy to become overwhelmed with so many minor details to remember. That’s before you consider the cost of getting to your new place.
The cost of moving is frequently surprising to people. Saving money may force you to make some bold and unsettling decisions, such as assuming you can do all of the grunt work yourself.
Before you decide to chuck all your belongings on the side of the road to avoid moving, look at our moving cost-cutting suggestions.
- Find Boxes
If you’re on a budget, start with the packing supplies. See if you can find some free moving boxes rather than paying for them. Liquor stores, bookstores, and grocery stores usually have boxes that would otherwise be thrown away. If you’re packing fragile products, look for sturdy boxes. Use packing tape to reinforce the seams for additional protection.
Most (if not all) of your items will not require bubble wrap or packaging peanuts. Rags, towels, clothing, and other soft materials can be used to wrap fragile and sensitive items. Make sure both sides of your boxes are labeled to keep them safe.
- Carefully Choose Your Dates
Prices fluctuate following supply and demand regulations. Move during the off-season, between late fall and early spring, if you can save money. Even if you don’t have the luxury of choosing the season, you can (ideally) pick the day and hour. The cost of moving on weekends and holidays is higher than during the week. That means you’ll save money by moving on a weekday.
- Get multiple quotes
Don’t accept the first quote you get if you want to save money. Request quotes from three to four reputable and trustworthy movers. You might find an unexpected pricing difference that benefits you.
Verify that the quote you receive covers everything you require and that the moving company stands by its pricing. Check online reviews from prior customers to confirm that they came on time and professionally and that they did not incur any surprise charges at the end of their move.
- Do your own packing
While full-service movers will pack your entire home for you, they will charge you for their services. If you need to save some money, pack everything yourself. The more planning you do ahead of time, the better because most movers base their fees on the time it takes to complete your move.
- Remove clutter
You can anticipate paying more if you have more items because movers charge based on how long the relocation will take. If you’re looking to save money on your relocation, consider removing clutter.
We recommend that you declutter before every move. Why waste time and effort packing and unpacking goods you don’t want or need? Relocation is an excellent option to start again. You might be able to generate some money if you have things to get rid of that you could sell. Allow adequate time to organize, analyze, list, and finish the transaction without feeling rushed.
